Bean and Leaf
Hi, do you want to tell us a bit about yourself?
Hi we’re Sam and Alisa and we own Bean & Leaf Coffee House, we’ve been married for 7 years and have a cute little 1 year old called Louis but we nickname him Baby Bean.
We have done a fair few different roles in our life so far, Sam used to have a personal training business and I used to work within an office job helping businesses let out spaces at the Tech Park in Coventry. Before this I worked in a bakery and loved every second!
A few fun facts about us, Sam used to live in Cyprus! Before we opened Bean & Leaf I got through to the interview stage for Bake Off!
For those that don’t know Bean & Leaf, what do you do?
We’re Bean & Leaf Coffee House based in Coventry City Centre right near Broadgate. We’ve just had our 3rd birthday and have 6 lovely staff including ourselves.
We first had the idea to open a coffee shop whilst sitting in a speciality coffee shop in Birmingham about 5 years ago, we were wanting a change in our careers and travelled across the UK finding the best speciality coffee shops so it came very naturally and with a lot of passion.
Right from the start we always felt passionate about bringing speciality coffee to Coventry and giving the best possible experience to customers. We’re so passionate about making every person feel welcomed and comfortable and when you put a great coffee with friends in the mix with that, it just becomes home from home and a place you want to be time and time again.
How has COVID-19 impacted you?
We’ve made a lot of changes over lockdown and have renovated and changed a lot of our decor. It’s something we always planned to do and it fell at the right time seeing as we couldn’t open at first.
Having more time over this year due to COVID-19 has given us a chance to have some headspace and see if we’re reaching the goals we always set out to do.
We’re always striving to do our best for everyone who visits so we’ve been fine tuning our processes and making sure that what we’re delivering is the best for everyone who walks through the door.
Where do you see your business in the next 5 years?
We’re working on opening a bigger premises and adding to our bakery section, it’s a dream to be able to bring more and more baked goods to peoples tables.
We’re also gradually but surely working on a project that brings young people/students together to have TED style talks from an inspirational speaker and just gather around a table together to chat and build relationships to help with mental illnesses and difficulties with isolation.
That sounds so exciting, and what do you think about City of Culture 2021?
We’re so excited for City of Culture 2021 and it’s amazing to see how much the city is changing. It’s hopefully going to bring more visitors to the city and we’d love to contribute to their visit and make it a great experience for them whilst they take a rest from their activities. We’re not going to over complicate what we do during this time and really home in on what we already do and offer a welcoming smile along with it.
Finally, what is your message to the people of Coventry for this 2021?
If we’ve learnt anything over lockdown it’s to really be in the present and enjoy our time together as much as possible. So we wish everyone the best 2021 whatever we find ourselves doing in our time.
